Job Description

This is entry level to semi-skilled work in a variety of public works, utility, and facility construction, maintenance, and repair activities which may include streets, parks, utilities or solid waste operations.
Work involves responsibility for performing a variety of maintenance work in the care and upkeep of streets, parkways, parks, water lines, sewers, and other facilities. An employee of this class is also expected to read water meters. Initially, work is closely supervised, but as experience is gained, an employee of this class receives more complex and varied assignments. Work is typically accomplished in crews, but employees of this class may also perform certain assignments independently. Work is assigned and reviewed by various Public Works Division Supervisors or other designated employees of higher grade.
This classification is a safety-sensitive position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations and/or the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act. As a safety-sensitive classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening. Possession of a medical marijuana certification will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7: 00 - 3: 30
Weekends as critical work requires ( line breaks)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs a variety of public works maintenance activities including construction labor, brush pickup, tree trimming, water main and service repair, sewer line repair, catch basin repair, street repair, street sweeping, grass cutting, building and facility maintenance, general repairs, painting, clean-up, athletic field maintenance, recreation equipment installation and repair, and when necessary, snow plowing and ice control via salt/sand spreading and shoveling.
Assists in repairing, replacing, and maintaining water mains, services, sewer lines, hydrants, valves, and related facilities; works in confined spaces and open trenches.
Performs heavy manual labor at grade and in excavated trenches in grading, patching, and repairing streets, parks equipment, water lines, sewer lines, drainage structures and other public works facilities; picks up and loads materials; drives pick-up trucks, mowers and related equipment in moving and delivering material.
Uses and operates hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, picks, jack hammers, mowers, saws, weed trimmers, hedge trimmers, concrete cutters, and a wide variety of hand tools. O This safety sensitive position involves the operation of a motor vehicle, other vehicle, equipment, machinery or power tools. Responds to emergencies after normal working hours. O Promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
Practices and promotes safe workplace procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; experience in maintenance, construction, or labor related work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
Knowledge of the type and uses of tools, materials, and standard equipment used in construction and maintenance work.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform relatively heavy manual work.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Oklahoma Class D driver' s license with ability to obtain Commercial Class B driver' s license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in outside weather conditions including extreme temperature variances. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts; in precarious places; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, dust, pollen, mold, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, and vibration.
